Los Angeles County Sees Spike in Rabid Bats
Officials Urge Caution and Professional Bat Removal
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed 61 rabid bats so far in 2025, the second-highest total ever recorded. Health officials warn that while bats are essential to the environment, they are also the main carriers of rabies in Southern California.
Residents are urged never to handle bats, alive or dead. Any bat found indoors, near sleeping people or pets, or acting strangely during daylight should be reported immediately to Animal Control or Public Health. Because bat bites can be very small and often go unnoticed, even minor contact should be treated as potential exposure.
Rabid bats have been identified across Los Angeles County, from suburban neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley to urban buildings, schools, and parks, continuing a decade-long rise in detections. Health experts emphasize that vigilance and professional removal remain the best protection for homes and businesses.
